Data Centres'll shape IT businesses in Nigeria
By Dayo Oketola | October 16, 2012

The Chief Executive Officer, Capitoline, a United Kingdom company, Mr. Matt Flowerday, and the Director, Business and Strategy, KITS Technologies Limited, Mr. Taofeek Okoya, have said that data centre will shape the way Information Technology business is run in Nigeria, adding that it is the engine room that runs today's global digital economy.

The two experts, however, warned that energy utilisation in most data centre was grossly inefficient, leading to astronomical rise in temperature and eventually grounding of the data centre.

Flowerday said in an Audit of over 50 data centres within the past two years, Capitoline found that running data centre with a wider temperature/humidity ranges took less air conditioning energy and helped to minimise energy consumption.

Besides, among all sources of data centre failures, he explained that temperature topped with 55 per cent.

He further stressed that 84 major data centre failures that occurred within the space of 36 months globally had their root cause traced to energy/power, design, specifications, processes and operating procedures.

Flowerday said though virtualisation was known to reduce servers in the data centre, which should have ultimately served to reduce the vast amount of energy that data centres consumed, research had shown otherwise.

He explained that the recent training for data centre managers in Nigeria was aimed at helping IT businesses in the country address the challenges faced in data centre energy management.

Flowerday said data centre would achieve efficient energy utilisation with adherence to international tier best practice/standards in both the design and operational management.

Okoya, who spoke in a similar vein, said a good understanding of the design concept, strict compliance to tier standards and green agenda metrics could seriously save most data centres in the country of avoidable failures.
